As in Mexico
Tequila, which did not became famous until the 1980's by movies like Under the Volcano or 92°F in the shade, owes much of it's success to the special ways in which the Mexican consume this drink.
In cafe's it is served with salt. One puts a bit of salt on the back of one's hand, licks it off and and 'down's' a shot of tequila. Other variants: biting a piece of lime or a spanish pepper!
The contrast with the alcohol is sensational. With a 'rapido' one add some tonic to a glass of tequila and slams it on the bar, thus making it's content fizz. After that one finishes the glasses in a single swig. Etc., etc.... a visual and noisy spectacle with allure.
It's also possible to enjoy Tequila quietly, especially the kinds that have ripened longer and are amber colored. The tequila 'reposado' with remain in a cask for a few weeks, but the 'anêjo' ripens for at least six months.
