Czars and stars
The reputation of Vodka, a popular but long under-appreciated spirit, started to grow when the producers gained the favor of the Russian czars. In 1886 Pierre Smirnoff became the official purveyor to Alexander III, because his vodka was the purest.
When the Czars fell in 1917, Smirnoff also fell, but reemerged in the western world soon after. It was distilled from 1934 in the United States. Smirnoff had a difficult start in the new world, but with the help of the american movie stars, he eventually won the favor of the american people. Harpo Marx, Joan Crawford, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Woody Allen would endorse this product with the help of tested cocktail recipes like Black Russian and Moscow Mule.
