Brandy: for the lack of something better?
France isn't the only country to produce a spirit from wine, those can be found the world over. Those products are commonly called 'brandy', but there are also other eau-de-vie (mostly based on grains) that carry this name. In England brandy is synonym with cognac. Brandy is usually somewhat more crude and less full in taste than cognac and armagnac, because the distillation process is different and it does not need to ripen.
However, brandy is very suitable for use in cocktails, because it is strong enough in taste and the 'imperfections' are hidden by other ingredients.
